"Christmas (Babe Please Come up Abode)" is a stone song originally sung by Darlene Love and included on the 1963 seasonal compilation album, A Christmas Souvenir for Yous from Phil Spector. The vocal was written by Ellie Greenwich, Jeff Barry and Phil Spector.

Upon release, the song did non notice commercial success but in later years, information technology has gone on to become a Christmas standard. It charted for the first time on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2018 and has since peaked at number xvi. It has also peaked at number 7 on the Vacation 100 chart. The song has likewise been covered many times; nearly notably by Mariah Carey, Michael Bublé and U2.

Groundwork and release [edit]

Love was given a demo of the song over the phone and went on to record the song.[1] The song was released as a single in 1963.[ii] and in 1964 (Philles X-125).[three] Upon release, the song was not a huge success just it has gone on to become a Christmas standard.[4]

In 1963, Phil Spector the producer found that the vocal was strong enough to warrant a non-seasonal version and wrote a version "Johnny (Baby Please Come Dwelling)" which Love also performed.[four] This version was released to the public in 1976 as the concluding track on the Spector compilation album, Rare Masters Vol. 2.[iv]

Chart performance [edit]

Despite not charting on release, the song has since found commercial success in afterward years. The song charted on the Billboard Holiday 100 nautical chart at number 99 on the week catastrophe December 13, 2014,[5] reaching a peak position of number seven, vii years afterward (on the week ending December 4, 2021).[half-dozen] On the week ending Dec 29, 2018, the rails entered the primary Billboard Hot 100 chart for the first time at number 50,[seven] and attained an all-time top position of number 17 on the week ending December xi, 2021 (upon its 3rd chart re-entry).[8] On the official UK Singles Chart, "Christmas (Infant Delight Come Domicile)" fabricated its outset appearance on the calendar week of five Jan 2017 at number 74. It entered the same nautical chart again one yr later at number 77, and once more on the week of 20 December 2018 at number eighty, eventually reaching the number 22 two weeks later. It so made its overall chart elevation of 16 during the week of January 1, 2022.[9]

Live performances [edit]

Starting time in 1986 and continuing for 29 years, Darlene Love performed the song annually on the concluding new episode earlier Christmas of Late Nighttime with David Letterman (NBC, 1986–92) and Late Evidence with David Letterman (CBS, 1993–2014), 28 times in all. The exception was in 2007, when Beloved was unable to perform due to the Writers' Strike and a repeat of her 2006 performance was shown instead.[10] She performed the song with Paul Shaffer and the bear witness'south house band (The World's Most Unsafe Band at NBC, the CBS Orchestra at CBS).[11] Dear likewise performed the song on December 24, 2013 in forepart of traders at the New York Stock Exchange equally the market place closed for the day. Showtime in 2015, the tradition of Love's annual functioning of the vocal moved to The View (ABC, 2015–present), where it has connected during its last edition before Christmas in the years since.[12]

In December 2010, Rolling Stone magazine ranked "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)" first on its list of The Greatest Rock and Ringlet Christmas Songs, noting that "nobody can match Dear's emotion and sheer vocal power." The song has also been used in several movies.[fourteen]

"Christmas (Baby Delight Come Home)" was not widely recognized subsequently its initial release but has gone on to be covered many times by dissimilar artists over the years. Ane of the earliest cover version was past The Tranquillity Jungle, for the 1968 anthology The Story Of Snoopy's Christmas.[15]

The song was covered by Irish rock band U2 in 1987 during a sound check in Glasgow, Scotland during their Joshua Tree Tour.[16] It was officially released on the compilation A Very Special Christmas the same year and on the album Unreleased & Rare in the digital box prepareThe Consummate U2 in 2004.[17]

In 1994, Mariah Carey recorded a version and included it on her album Merry Christmas.[18] Carey's version reached number 59 on Billboard'south Hot Digital Songs chart in 2011 and number 20 on the US Holiday 100; the latter being the second highest position for the song on the chart subsequently the original.[19] She first performed her version in 2008 at The GRAMMY Nominations Concert Live.[20] The song was too added to her setlist for her All I Desire for Christmas Is You: A Night of Joy and Festivity concert residency.[21] In 2021, Carey covered the song again for her Christmas special, Mariah's Christmas: The Magic Continues.[22]

In 2011, Michael Bublé covered the song for his album, Christmas.[23] In 2021, he performed the vocal live with Hannah Waddingham on his Christmas in the City NBC special celebrating the tenth anniversary of his Christmas anthology.[24]

In 2021 Keke Palmer and the cast of Sing two too covered the vocal for a 2021 Christmas commercial from Comcast's Xfinity and as a bonus rail from the original moving-picture show soundtrack of the aforementioned name.[25] Palmer and Tori Kelly performed the song alive on The Voice season 21 finale with the top thirteen acts.[26] The song has also been covered by Cher,[27] Foo Fighters,[28] Joey Ramone,[29] Jon Bon Jovi,[30] Jonathan Jackson,[31] Idina Menzel,[32] Little Mix,[33] and Noah Cyrus.[34]

Love herself has noted that her ii favourite covers of the vocal are Mariah Carey's, because "her'southward is then much like the original [...] with her groovy voice", and U2'due south, "because it doesn't audio like "Christmas (Baby)" and they had all three groundwork vocals on it".[35]
